History and Overview
Military Standard 130 (MIL-STD-130) is used to communicate the standard practices for Unique Identification (UID) marking of U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) property. This includes delivered property, government furnished property in possession of contractors (PIPC) and legacy property. These items must contain a Unique Item Identifier (UII), which consists of data matrix machine-readable information (MRI).
MIL-STD-130 also describes the materials permitted, minimum text size and fonts, format, syntax and rules for identifying marks on a part and where the mark must be located. Marks, including labels, must last the life of the item on which it is affixed.
Item traceability is the main force behind MIL-STD-130. After it is marked, an item’s UII is registered through the DoD’s Item Unique Identification (IUID) Registry, creating a single source for information on the item, such as its purchase date and price, history of repairs, and location in the field.
